A U.S. federal judge has temporarily blocked the Trump administration’s directive for mass firings of recently hired federal employees. The ruling comes after President Donald Trump and billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk announced cost-cutting measures in the administration.

Judge Alsup’s Landmark Ruling Against Federal Layoffs
San Francisco District Judge William Alsup ruled that the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) has no authority to direct federal agencies to fire employees, including probationary workers with less than a year of service.
The court directed the administration to revoke the January 20 memo and February 14 email that instructed agencies to identify and fire non-mission-critical employees.

Judge Alsup warned that the mass layoffs of federal workers could cause severe disruptions, affecting national parks, scientific research, and services for veterans.
“Probationary employees are the lifeblood of our government. They start at the bottom and work their way up. That’s how we renew ourselves,” he stated.

The court’s order applies only to employees covered by the lawsuit filed by worker unions. The Department of Defense (DoD), which is not part of the case, plans to fire 5,400 probationary employees on Friday.
The judge has directed the government to notify the DoD that their memo and email have been invalidated.

Everett Kelley, president of the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE), strongly opposed the Trump administration’s move.
“These are rank-and-file workers who joined the federal government to make a difference in their communities, only to be suddenly terminated due to this administration’s disdain for federal employees and desire to privatize their work,” Kelley said.

The U.S. Justice Department argued in court that the memos and emails only asked agencies to review probationary employees and assess potential terminations, rather than mandating layoffs.
However, another White House memo issued on Wednesday directed all federal agencies to submit plans by March 13 for a “significant reduction” in staffing.
