In a landmark announcement on January 20, 2025, Sanjiv Goenka, the owner of Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), revealed that Rishabh Pant will take over as the team’s captain for the upcoming IPL season. Pant, who led the Delhi Capitals (DC) in IPL 2024, was acquired by LSG for a record-breaking ₹27 crore during the mega auction, making him the most expensive player in IPL history.

Speaking about the decision, Goenka expressed his confidence in Pant’s leadership and talent. “He has the potential to become the greatest player in IPL history. His passion and determination are unmatched. I believe he will also be the best captain the league has ever seen,” Goenka stated.

Goenka has high expectations for Pant, envisioning him surpassing the legacy of Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni, the two most successful captains in IPL history. Rohit and Dhoni have each led their respective teams, Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings, to five IPL titles.
